To be honest, I wasn't too jazzed about the fact that I have to teach 5 students this semester and only get paid for one. (The other 4 count as credit for one of my classes.)
My first student didn't help my attitude much. Decent 11 year old boy, cute. Typical sport- and video-game-loving type, not extremely excited about piano.
But the second was a 9 year old girl, and she changed my attitude about teaching completely. The first thing she said when she walked through the door:
"Just so you know, I haven't had a piano lesson since May. And I've blocked all things piano from my brain this summer. So.. pretty much you're probably gonna have to re-teach everything to me. I don't even remember what the notes are."
This might seem a little disrespectful, but she said all this with a huge grin on her face, and I knew I was in for a treat.
She continued to make blunt and witty comments throughout the remainder of her lesson, and was constantly cracking me up! A 9 year old girl!
As she was walking out, I told her I was really excited to teach her this semester and I could tell she was going to be a good and fun student.
"Yeah, I am. But you only said my name once, and I saw you read it off a paper. Will you even be able to remember my name?"
and before I could open my mouth, she giggled, turned the corner, and was gone.
I always love someone who can make me laugh, no matter the age. And that girl has got a sassy, spunky, completely hilarious personality. This semester is going to be great!
