My Uncle is Awesome

And so is the cast (and crew!) of Viewmont High School's The Scarlet Pimpernel!

I had the delightful privilege of seeing this show (3 times) last weekend and I LOOOOOVED it! It's my new favorite musical, hands down.  I hadn't ever seen the musical version of the Scarlet Pimpernel before, I'd only seen the movie with Jane Seymour and Anthony Andrews.  But ever since I first saw the movie, I've loved this story -- especially the story of Percy and Marguerite. Going into it, I definitely was expecting to like the musical, but what I wasn't expecting was to be absolutely blown away! Viewmont's version was so amazing, people. I fell in love.

Firstly, it needs to be said -- Chase Peterson, who played Chauvelin, was PHENOMENAL. Holy. He's only 17(!), and he already has the vocal maturity of a much older Broadway singer.  I'll even go so far as to say I think he rivals Terrence Mann who played Chauvelin in the original Broadway cast. Don't believe me?
Watch this. {Fast forward to about 6:45 to hear his song}

And then watch this {start at 1:50}:

Unbelievable, right?
I know.

Percy (played by Colton Richins) was wonderful as well. His singing voice was most excellent and he had quite a bit of power.  One of the best things about his character though was his acting.  It was hilarious and just spot. on.  I just about died laughing during his scenes.  One of my favorite scenes of his is in this same video {start at 2:53 for this scene. To hear his singing voice, start at the beginning}. Marguerite (played by Caitlin Bird) was also excellent. I used to accompany her voice lessons (and Chase's) when she was a sophomore and always thought she had a wonderful voice. But even in the two years since that time, her voice has grown and matured so much. She has tons of power and she is an incredible actress too {start at 8:51 in the above embedded video to hear her sing}.

The rest of the cast also did an amazing job.  Percy's men especially (videos of them to come soon!) were so good.  They were all hilarious actors, dancers, singers -- the works. Every second was enjoyable. One of the things I loved about this show was how the story draws you in.  You want Percy to succeed in his endeavors as the Scarlet Pimpernel, you want he and Marguerite to work things out and be in love again.  Not to mention the entire show is absolutely hilarious.  The music was so good; nearly every number is exciting or emotional in some way.  The whole cast was strong and they all seemed to love it as well.  My sister and cousins were in it and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Another thing I loved: The costumes! AMAZING!
If you've ever been in a VHS musical, you know how much work goes in behind the scenes to make and get the costumes.  I am always in awe of the final product.

But now are you wondering why the title of this post is "My Uncle is Awesome"?  He volunteered to do all this publicity for the show!!! He created this amazing facebook page and took pictures and videos from the first week of rehearsals all the way through the performances (all the pictures and videos in this post were taken by him).  I've loved looking back at the pictures and now watching the videos (Yes, I am obsessed.  But how could you not be? Seriously).  He did such a great job and my hat is off to him, and Ms. McGuire for putting on the most amazing show I have ever seen at Viewmont!

Speaking of Ms. McGuire, she announced that she is retiring at the end of this year and I am SO sad! She is amazing and so incredibly talented, and I think Viewmont's music department will suffer without her.  I know the community will deeply miss her and the shows she puts on.  I learned so much from her in high school and I'm so glad I got the opportunity to work with her for three years! Being an accompanist for her especially was an experience I will always remember. It was challenging, but I grew so much as a pianist and a singer under her direction.  I'll never forget her influence in my life.

When the cast brought her up on the stage for the final curtain call closing night and she sang with them, I got the chills.  And I totally teared up.

Congratulations to her and Viewmont High School for putting on such an incredible show!
