8 Books on My To-Read Shelf

by - 6/15/2018

I have about 10 million books on my to-read list, but there are a few I'm itching to read sooner rather than later.

Yes, I own all of these (except Anna Karenina, which is my mom's copy) and no, I haven't read them all. I also have this (kind of terrible, but also really delightful) habit of buying books faster than I can read them. I'm trying to slow this down, and I have recently. But I haven't stopped... so while I'm slowly working through the to-read pile, it kind of just keeps growing. :)

Anyway, on to the books so I can keep whittling that pile down!

The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking Trilogy) by Patrick Ness
This is the one book in this lineup that I've already read. But it (and the other two in the trilogy) are just SO good. An exciting dystopian/sci-fi trilogy with some pretty interesting deviations from the genre standard, these will keep you on the edge of your seat! And unlike some others I've read, these totally pan out in the BEST way. Sci-fi isn't normally a genre I'm drawn to, but these are inexplicably good. My brother was looking for some books to read on his summer break from college and I recommended these, and he's flown through them in the last week or so while also texting me all his thoughts along the way. :) It's reminding me just how dang GOOD they are and I want to read them all over again! Especially with the movie coming out early next Spring.

I honestly don't know much about this book, but it's one of those times I judged a book by its cover and it was just so eye-catching I snagged it. :) This has come back to bite me in the past but I hope it doesn't with this one! I read Everything, Everything  by Yoon and LOVED it (though my feeling is not the general consensus, reviews are pretty firmly love OR hate, not many in-betweens) and I have pretty high hopes for this one.

The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg
This is one Jim actually grabbed for himself at the bookstore a few weeks ago, and based on what he's told me about it already, I know I'm going to love it! I've been especially fascinated with habits lately, and this seems right up my alley.

I just finished You Are a Badass and L-O-V-E-D it so I know I'll just eat this one up too. Yes, Sincero uses a few swear words to make her points, but I honestly feel so motivated and inspired after reading her words! She makes you want to get off your butt and DO STUFF instead of just thinking about it.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
I am one of the sad few in the world who have never read this book. I've been told approximately 1 million times that I NEED TO READ IT, so it's definitely on my list! I honestly don't know hardly anything about the story (besides that it's maybe sort of... sad?) but I'm excited to finally learn what the hype is all about.

Red Queen (series) by Victoria Aveyard
I've heard SO many good things about this one, but didn't want to start this series until all the books were out. And since I have about 18,000 other books to read, I had plenty to keep me busy until the last book came out last month! This just sounds like one of those perfect fantasy, coming-of-age, rags-to-riches, unexpectedly-rising-from-the-dust, action-packed kind of stories and I'm ALL FOR IT.

Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly
Yet another book that I've heard endless good things about. Sometimes I tire of the WWII genre (don't hate me for that), but every once in a while I love to sink my teeth into a good one and this seems like an excellent option! It's inspired by a true story, and I'm pretty excited about it.

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
I kind of have to gear myself up to read giant classics such as this because I typically don't like reading more than one book at a time, and this book is such a big commitment! But this is one I've wanted to read for a very long time. I know it's not a happy type of book, which is another reason I've been holding off on it, but I'm looking forward to getting to it very soon. I mean, it's "acclaimed by many as the world's greatest novel", so I need to see if I agree!

Happy Friday.
